I was about to do a tarot reading. To prepare, I went out into my garden and asked for help in order to help.
Next second, all I could see (in my mind’s eye) were forget-me-nots. I felt their gentle and warm healing presence, but I wondered why they showed up. Why this particular sweetness?
They said: Soften heart. Open ears. Feet to ground.
I listened—and yet, I wanted to understand more. As it turns out, their presence shaped the reading more than I expected—but more on that at the end.
So, here is my research on the meaning and symbolism of the forget-me-not.
A Flower of Memory and Presence
These tiny blue blossoms often grow in tender clusters, and the name itself carries a plea—forget me not—as if to guard something precious from slipping away. It holds the essence of remembrance: of loved ones, of soul truths, of something sacred we hold dear.
In many cultures, forget-me-nots symbolize:
- Fidelity
- Soul Memory
- Enduring Love
- Connection beyond time
They are often used to honor those who have passed, to keep memories alive, or to mark a moment that must be held in the heart. But their message isn’t only about looking back—it’s also about showing up.
The forget-me-not says: Be here, now. Remember who you are. Remember what matters.

Legends and Folklore of the Forget-Me-Not
One well-known legend speaks of a knight and his beloved. As they walked near a river, he bent to pick a cluster of blue flowers for her. The current swept him away, and with his final breath, he cried, “Forget me not!”
Since then, the flower has been a symbol of love that outlives separation.
In Christian lore, it’s said the Virgin Mary once wished for a flower to remind people of her presence. Where her tears fell, forget-me-nots grew. Because of this, some view the flower as a symbol of divine protection and the gentle touch of spirit.
In Victorian floriography (the language of flowers), forget-me-nots stood for true love, lasting remembrance, and the ache of missing someone deeply.
What Forget-Me-Nots Told Me
When forget-me-nots appear—whether in your garden, your dreams, or your inner vision—they might be bringing messages like the ones I received:
- Soften your heart
Let love and compassion bloom, even when life feels cold or armored. - Open your ears
Not just to words, but to what people are really feeling and sharing with you. - Ground yourself
Return to your body. To the breath. To your feet. To the Earth. Let your presence root you.
Their arrival is a nudge to reconnect—to yourself, to the soft truth you carry, and from there to spirit.

Energetic Properties of Forget-Me-Not
Energetically, forget-me-nots are gentle yet deep. Flower essence practitioners sometimes work with them to support:
- Emotional integration
Especially where grief, loss, or inner fragmentation linger. - Healing soul wounds
Especially those that feel old or ancestral, where the pain is subtle but persistent. - Dreamwork and spiritual reconnection
Helping bring clarity to subconscious messages and reweaving a sense of spiritual belonging.
Their soft blue hue connects them to the throat chakra (expression) and third eye (intuition). They encourage us to speak tender truths and to trust the inner vision.
How to Work With Forget-Me-Nots
If you’re drawn to them, you can:
- Sit quietly beside them
Let their presence surround you. Ask what they wish to share. Listen. Learn how to communicate with them in my article on attunement. - Grow them intentionally
In your garden or pots, as a reminder of what you choose not to forget—your truth, your heart, your ancestors, your path. - Use their flower essence
For subtle, heartful healing. Best taken with intention and patience. - Journal with them
Ask: What is trying to be remembered? or What part of me is calling for presence?

The Tarot Reading
That tarot reading? It ended up being a gentle, luminous session.
The cards were clear. The messages, precise and supportive.
And it held the sweet magic of synchronicity. After preparing the tarot cards, I got up to choose a crystal—one I felt wanted to be present during the reading. Later, when we reached the end, I wanted to offer her something more—a soft landing, a little light to carry forward. So I pulled a crystal card for her.
And yes—you guessed it.
It was the exact same crystal I had picked before the reading. The one that had been with us all along:
Citrine.
Bright, warm, encouraging.
I felt it belonged to her. So she went home not just with insight, but with a physical gift—a reminder to help her focus and let go.

The True Meaning of Forget-Me-Not and Citrine
Later, it made sense. The citrine’s message was release your worries, give them to source.
The forget-me-nots had said: soften heart, open ears, feet to ground.
One reminded her to surrender. The other reminded me to stay close, to show up.
Together, they whispered what we often forget: that we don’t have to carry things alone.
Maybe that’s what forget-me-nots really offer—the medicine of belonging.
To yourself.
To those who walk with you.
And sometimes, release is the strongest thing in the room.
