State in the Age of AI: Being & Becoming Can’t Be Prompted

  • Published

Whether you input a simple prompt or fine-tune your AI-creation for hours, it is missing one thing – your state. AI can make anything, regardless of how you feel, what you embody, or how you express yourself. You don’t have to be present, and you don’t have to grow in any way. You can essentially make it output 100 tracks without becoming a better musician. You might develop a better ear in the process of curation, but it is not necessary. That is one of the dangers of relying on it too much: you can essentially stop growing and lose, or never develop, your abilities.

Now, does this matter if you don’t need them?

I used to love the “People are Awesome” videos. Just by watching them, I felt inspired. I felt energized, and I wanted to learn new skills, become more of who I am, discover new sides of myself, and go deeper in my passions. I have an intrinsic drive to keep becoming. I think that’s part of being human.

AI can help me be more human by giving me more time to do the things I want to do. But if I trade away deep, embodied, deliberate growth in the process, I’ve lost. That’s why I choose to create tracks from scratch and do nature photography. I’m okay with it helping me refine my texts once I’ve written them, and I’m happy it can give me an image when needed. Still, when I have time, I prefer to sit down and draw it myself. Choose wisely where you want to grow, and let AI do the other stuff.

And if you use AI a lot, make sure you check in on how you feel in the process. Your state affects your present and future.
